Initial Consultation.
Prior to the photo session, I like to schedule a brief visit with the people I’ll be photographing. At this meeting I usually ask you to bring a bunch of clothing so we can discuss the style and color scheme of your portrait. Don’t stress out over this event! Just bring a pile of clothes. Even if it’s all wrong it will give us a starting point and help me in designing a lighting setup. It’s also important for kids to get a chance to hang out in the studio for a while and just play. It helps them, especially the shy ones, to become comfortable with the studio and more importantly, relaxed around me.
In the Studio.
For the actual photo shoot, most of the preparation will take place before you arrive. Expect to be here one to one-and-a-half hours. Often times, especially true with young children, I may be actually taking pictures for only 15-20 minutes. Their limited concentration won’t allow us to go any longer. In that short period, while their enthusiasm is at it’s peak, I can usually get a surprising number of beautiful shots. We often break several times for changes of clothing or just to relax for a few minutes.
